    Breastfeeding Issue

I was in a local restraunt and my son got hungry, so I fed him.  I had my back to the rest of the restraunt, covered up, and was very discrete about it.  My husband had a couple behind me say something to him to the effect of taking my son and his dinner to the restroom, and I turned around and told them to take theres too.  Well they got offended and I was as well and they called the manager over, and the manager asked me to either go to the restroom or to my car to feed my child.  My family and I responded by leaving all together, we were all furious.  What are my rights as a breastfeeding mother in public?

Thank you for your inquiry.  Unfotunately you were in a private establishment, and as long as you were not being discriminated against on the basis of race, sex, or some other protected class, there is not much you can do civilly against the restaurant.  You can never as a customer support that establishment.  Breastfeeding is a wonderful thing for your child, so don't let this unfortunate experience discourage you from continuing to do so.  Your child is much more important than some ignorant patrons and an unfair establishment's opinion.

    Re: Breastfeeding Issue

I know this area may beclosed but wanted to add mine and my wife's experiences. You will encounter this ignorance often. She breastfed our son for over 2 years and it happened quite often when we happened to go out. She had a special blanket that velcroed in place so that there were no embarrassing "wardrobe malfunctions", but people still got offended. It was usually people into their 40's and above, with senior citizens complaining the most. It is something that we just have to deal with. We have another child due soon and will go through this again. But breastfeeding is the best for a child and we won't deprive her of that because of ignorance. Stay strong.
